Traditions of sheep farming in the region of outlaws

Learn More

According to the legend, the dreaded outlaw Jakub Surovec used to sit here. Certainly, yet in his times, the sound of bells from a sheep herd echoed in this region. Although the outlaw was caught a long time ago, legends stay as well as the sheep grazing traditions, which are deeply rooted on the Zbojská sheep shelter under the imaginary gate to Muránská planina. Traditional sheep sheltering in a wooden chalet full of copper cauldrons or “gelety” (note of the interpreter: containers for salty sheep cheese) may have been replaced by a more modern cheese factory, but the taste and quality of sheep products from Sheep Shelter Zbojská remain true to the customs of the past. Even today, sheep's cheese is manually pressed together in order to produce “oštiepky” (smoked sheep cheese), the “bryndza” (salty fresh sheep cheese) ripens and the “žinčica” (boiled sheep whey) is boiled off. On the meadows the shepherds graze sheep every day. We can find the traditional sheep breed - the Slovak Wallachian Sheep – within the herd. It has almost disappeared from Slovak meadows. It is here that they are trying to return on the pastures of Horehronie.
