Židovská synagóga

Sightseeing tour of Jewish synagogue in Brezno

The cornerstone of unique Jewish synagogue in the Horehronie region was laid in 1901 following consecration in 1902. The synagogue was designed by architect Alojz Paverberger from Banská Bystrica. In its beginnings was the synagogue used for religious purposes of the Jewish community, which was at that time very numerous. After the Second World War, only few Jews returned to Brezno and therefore the Jewish community in the town ceased to exist. Inspite of that, the synagogue survived these hard war times and remains the silent witness of these events until today.

The building was officially declared to be part of Central Register of Cultural Monuments in 1972. The synagogue is no longer used for religious purposes and after recent reconstruction has become a place for different cultural events. However, on the second floor of the synagogue is still the permanent exhibition devoted to history of the synagogue and the Jewish community.
