Memorial room of Samo Chalupka

The village of Horná Lehota spreads over the south side of the Low Tatras, near the lake Krpáčovo, and it is a birthplace of one of the most popular Slovak national resurgence actors - Samo Chalupka.

The memorial room of Samo Chalupka was launched in 1995. It is located in a building of the former evangelical school in the village of Horná Lehota in Horehronie, near the evangelical rectory, which is also the birth house of Samo Chalupka. His memorial plaque and monument are nearby. Chalupka himself was one of the leading poets among Štúr’s group of poets. He was a co-author of the Memorandum of the Slovak Nation. One of his most important works is perhaps the popular epic poem Mor ho!

The exposition in the memorial room of Samo Chalupka is divided into two parts. The first part presents ethnographic material turns the spotlight to life of the habitants of Horná Lehota and its surroundings. The second part contains materials about the life and work of Samo Chalupka, samples of his manuscripts, book editions of his works and some personal belongings of the poet. There are also written documents about the Chalupka family and about the life of the playwright Ján Chalupka, the older brother of Samo Chalupka.

The nature trail starts in the village, where the memorial room of Sam Chalupka is located. The trail continues through forest and meadow paths around the village to the spring of Samo Chalupka. At the crossroads, it is possible to take a turn to the Lake Krpáčovo, where you can cool off during hot days and return to Horná Lehota.
